Glanbia Ingredients Ireland launches Wexford Cheese Plant Upgrade
Between August 2016 and April 2017, the plant underwent a complete upgrade including construction of incremental capacity and the installation of new state-of-the-art equipment across all key areas of manufacture. During 2016, the plant at Rocklands produced 18,000 tonnes of high quality cheddar cheese, and the enhanced plant will now increase cheese production capacity to approximately 28,000 tonnes per year. In addition, the Wexford investment will deliver a valuable whey stream for the sports nutrition sector, one of Glanbia’s key market platforms.
The Wexford brand has a long history of producing top quality cheddar cheese from grass fed cows’ milk collected from Irish family farms across the South East of Ireland. Over many generations, GII has been perfecting the craft of cheddar cheese making. Wexford cheddar boasts superb character for a wide variety of tastes and applications and its superior flavour and texture has been recognised with numerous international cheese awards. The upgraded cheese facility is a designated Non-GMO Project Verified site, which is a core element of GII’s new Truly Grass Fed™ cheese offering. Non-GMO Project Verified is North America’s most trusted seal for GMO avoidance. Glanbia’s Truly Grass Fed ingredient range was awarded this highly regarded verification in March of this year, enabling us to meet the demand from US based customers and consumers who are seeking transparency regarding the ingredients used in their food.
Commenting on the launch of the upgraded plant, Tommy Hammelmann, GII Commercial Director said,
